Changes to the A53 speed limit

The following notification has been received from Shropshire Council:

(SPEED LIMITS) ORDER 2006 (AMENDMENT NO. 1) ORDER 2026

On 16 June 2026 Shropshire Council made an order to introduce a 50mph speed limit onto the following length of road in Shrewsbury:

That length of the A53 from a point 36 metres northeast of its junction with the A49 Battlefield Roundabout to a point 92 metres north of the northernmost property boundary of “The Bings”.

Any existing speed limits on this length of road will be revoked.

These changes will come into effect on 20 June 2026.

A copy of the order may be examined during normal office hours (8:45am-5:00pm Monday to Thursday, and 8:45am-4:00pm on Fridays) at Shropshire Council, The Guildhall, Frankwell, Shrewsbury.

If you wish to question the validity of the Order, or any provisions in it, on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by The Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or on the grounds that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under it has not been complied with in relation to the Order, you may, within six weeks from 16 June 2026, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

(SPEED LIMITS) ORDER 2006 (AMENDMENT NO. 1) ORDER 2026

Shropshire Council, in exercise of its powers under Sections 84(1) and (2), and 82(2) of, and Part IV of Schedule 9 to, the Road Traffic Regulation Act1984 (the Act of 1984) as amended and of all other enabling powers, and after consultation with the Chief Officer of Police in accordance with Part III of Schedule 9 to the Act of 1984, hereby makes the following Order.

1. This order shall come into operation on 20 June 2026 and may be cited as The Shropshire Council (Borough of Shrewsbury & Atcham) (No. 1) (Speed Limits) Order 2006 (Amendment No. 1) Order 2026.
2. The Shropshire Council (Borough of Shrewsbury & Atcham) (No. 1) (Speed Limits) Order 2006 is hereby amended to incorporate the following changes: a) The following length of road in Shrewsbury is deleted from Schedule 5 (National Speed Limit): A49 Battlefield Roundabout approach road: A53 for a distance of 110 metres in an Easterly direction; b) The following length of road in Shrewsbury is deleted from the Restricted Roads Schedule: That length of the A53 Market Drayton Road from its junction with Battlefield Roundabout for a distance of 119 metres in a generally north easterly direction; c) The following length of road in Shrewsbury is added to Schedule 6 (50mph Speed Limit): That length of the A53 from a point 36 metres northeast of its junction with the A49 Battlefield Roundabout to a point 92 metres north of the northernmost property boundary of “The Bings”.
3. The prohibitions and restrictions imposed by this Order shall be in addition to and not in derogation from any restriction or requirement imposed by any regulation made or having effect as if made under the Act or by or under any other enactment.
